A Beautiful Tongue

Monday, July 25, 2022

Due to health issues I had been having for several months, I landed at the doctor’s office awhile back. My doctor had been out of country for almost two months, so we were very glad to have her back, especially after an urgent care and ER visit.

After getting caught up on all the problems, she began checking all the usual things. She came at me with the tongue pressure stick, so I knew what to do.  “Aaaah” I gurgled, the tongue pressure stick doing its job in my mouth.

The doctor’s eyes lit up in surprise as she exclaimed, “Wow, you have a beautiful tongue!”

Now it was my turn to act in surprise. “Where did that come from?” I blurted out.

She went on to explain that people with health issues usually reflect that on their tongue, but my tongue looked very healthy. She concluded, with the exception to the problem at hand, my body was doing pretty well. Great news.

Later, in the parking lot of Walmart, Tim commented about my beautiful tongue, not realizing an older woman was within hearing distance. She glared at me from the back of her van. What was she thinking? It brought a few chuckles to my soul. She had no idea, nor would she.

The Bible has a lot to say about the tongue. Many verses speak of the destruction caused by the tongue. Others speak of how our words can be used to uplift, comfort, and praise. Psalm 126:2 says, “Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.”  Proverbs 12:18, “… the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 15:4, “A gentle tongue is a tree of life…” Proverbs 21:23, “Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.” And Proverbs 31:26, “…the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”  The list could go on, but you get the idea.

How we use our tongue is a choice. Job 27:4 explains, “my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit.” Also, James 1:26 instructs, “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.” How we use our tongue is very important.

It is important to remember what Psalms 139:4 says, “Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.”  The fact that He knows should make us consider our words carefully. Someone once said, before you speak, THINK:
              *Is it True
              *Is it Helpful
              *Is it Inspiring
              *Is it Necessary
              *Is it Kind

May we desire to have a beautiful tongue to be able to say as it states in 2 Samuel 23:2, “The Spirit of the LORD speaks by me; his word is on my tongue.”  So that we can be among those who joyfully do what Philippians 2:11 says, “… every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Tim loves to comment about my beautiful tongue. People are puzzled but we laugh.

How is your tongue?

Blessings, Mari

Tim and I downsized greatly from a 2500 sq ft house to a 36 foot long RV so we could be more flexible for this new chapter in our lives, following God's delicious unknown. We have been missionaries for the Lord Jesus Christ for over 30 years and are continually amazed at where He leads us. It is an exciting journey. May we always bring glory to HIS name!
